The 1980s saw the onslaught of computing technology which in psychology took the ugly shape of Computer-Human Interaction (CHI) - or Human-Computer Interaction as we like to say in Europe.
At the beginning of the decade I was at the Risø National Laboratories (Denmark), where the agenda was marked by the aftermath of the Three Mile Island accident in 1979. In 1982 I moved to the Halden Reactor Project in Norway, where I together with Ed Marshal, Sue Baker and many others was part of establishing the Halden Man-Machine Laboratory (HAMMLAB). In 1985 I returned to Denmark, at first sharing my time between the University of Copenhagen and Computer Resources International (CRI). After a few years, I started to work full time at CRI with no regrets over the loss of an academic career - and no intention of ever going back.
